Kitchen Drain Clog: Quick Steps to Unclog It
Bits of food, small kitchen items, grease, and soap can clog a kitchen drain over time. Residue lines the inside of your pipes and becomes a magnet to small bits of food. If you notice your kitchen sink draining slowly, get the clog taken care of before it gets worse. The worse it gets, the more work it will take to unclog it. You may even need to call your local plumber for help.
The simplest tool for a kitchen drain clog is a plunger. Most people have plungers to use for their toilets, but they work well to unclog any drain. To use the plunger, fill your sink with a couple of inches of water and then plunge the drain with as much force as you can manage. If the drain clears, you should see the water drain quickly. If it does not clear, give it a few more strong plunges.
If the plunger method does not work, get a small plumber's snake or auger at a local home improvement store. They are inexpensive and extremely handy to have on hand. They are a wire "snake-like" tool with a crank that allows you to twist the wire down the drain. At the end of the wire is a cluster of wires that "grab" the clot and either break it up or push it to a larger portion of the pipe. Either way, a plumber snake can fix your drainage problem very easily. Professional plumbers use larger versions of these snakes to clear things such as roots growing into your pipes.
Your third option is a regular garden hose. Bring the hose in through a door or window (have it turned off, of course), put it down the pipe as far as it will go, add towels and rags around the drain to keep water from backing up, and then get a partner to turn it on and off in short spurts. The pressure from the water might work to loosen the clog.
If these three methods do not work, there are chemical you can buy in the grocery store or home improvement store that break up drain clots chemically. These products are not typically environmentally-friendly and should be used as a last option, but they are effective. Alternatively, you can call your local plumber who always has more tricks and bigger tools to take care of that plugged up drain.
