Choosing the Best Spinning Wheels
Spinning wheels are devices used to twist raw fibers into threads or yarns. Wool or fleece sheared off from animals, especially sheep and goats, are some of the materials that are spun by this apparatus. Spinning wheels can turn raw fibers into yarn or thread, which are then used to create cloth through another type of instrument called a loom.
Spinning wheels spin the fibers by winding them together through a device called a flyer. Flyers are u-shaped parts of a spinning wheel that have a couple of hooks installed where the yarn would be fastened as the wheel rotates. Spinning wheels have orifices as well, where the wool would be inserted at regular intervals.
The thickness of the yarn would depend on the spinner's preference and the object that the yarn would later compose. The spinning wheel works as the spinner presses on a pedal called a treadle. The force applied on the treadle would be transferred to the wheel that holds the drive band through a stem called footman. The footman is the device that connects the wheel and the pedal, while the drive band links the wheel and the flyer whorl.
The flyer whorl, on the other hand, is a device directly hooked up with the flyer, which dictates how fast the spinning would go. The yarn is stored on a horizontal column called a bobbin, as the flyer tightly twirls the strands of the fiber, creating a more solid thread. Every part of a louet spinning wheel is essential, which is why careful inspection must be made when purchasing one.
Make sure that every part of the majacraft spinning wheel is functional and does not make any errors. Any flaw, whether minor or not, could cause inefficiency to the whole spinning process. Assure that every knob, wheel, or groove smoothly operates. Choose spinning wheels at the right sizes as well. Larger spinning wheels would not only cost you more money, but would occupy bigger spaces as well.
Louet spinning wheels can have one or two treadles, as well. Beginners are advised to use single-treadled spinning wheels, while experienced spinners can opt to use doubled-treadled spinning wheels.
