What is the Scoop on Superfoods?

If a food has high concentrations of the vitamins and dietary minerals that are recognized as being good for us, it is considered nutritionally dense. It is well known that we require vitamins and dietary minerals to maintain a healthy body, most of which come (or should come) from the food we eat, and many of us get them as supplements in pill form. Anything we eat, even junk food, contains some small amounts of some vitamins and minerals, so what's the scoop on superfoods?

Superfoods are different in that they are very nutritionally dense, meaning they contain extra high concentrations of vitamins and dietary minerals for their size, and have additional health benefits from 'antioxidants' and 'phytochemicals'. In order to get any significant nutrients from some foods, you would have to eat a considerable amount. Cucumbers for example are mostly water with not much nutritional value.

In amounts as small as a handful, certain superfoods can provide you with a significant amount of nutrients, sometimes delivering the entire recommended daily allowance for individual vitamins and minerals. That's why they are considered super. There are few foods that contain such high levels of nutrients in such small quantities, which is what makes superfoods so healthy. They provide nutrition above and beyond what we normally get from our food.

Nearly everyone has heard of antioxidants from television, but phytochemicals may be a new term, so we'll explain them both.

In a process called oxidation, oxygen reacts with cells in the body, which is damaging to the cells. Antioxidants are compounds that prevent oxidation, thus preventing the damage it causes. Cellular damage from oxidation has been linked to a number of conditions like heart disease, cancer, premature ageing, and more. By interfering with the chemical reactions, antioxidants can prevent or reduce cellular damage from oxidation and thus reduce adverse affects. Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is probably the best known antioxidant.

Phytochemicals, not yet recognized as being essential vitamins or dietary minerals, are naturally occurring compounds found in plants and animals. For the various chemical processes inside our bodies to function properly, we need some vitamins and dietary minerals, which is why they are considered 'essential'. We are only now starting to understand the potential health benefits of phytochemicals, and the properties of superfoods that minimize the risks of developing cancer and heart disease.

With the added antioxidants and phytochemicals and their potential health benefits, superfoods contain much more than just a high concentration of the essential nutrients we need.

In summary: we require vitamins and minerals for our bodies to function properly, and without sufficient nutrients our bodies begin to break down. Through modern research, new scientific discoveries indicate that antioxidants and phytochemicals may provide anti-cancer, anti-heart disease, and anti-ageing benefits, among others. Superfoods combine high levels of essential and non-essential nutrients like antioxidants and phytochemicals, and taste good too - which is a good reason to include superfoods as part of a healthy diet.
