Commonly associated with the egotistical yuppie culture of the 1980s, along with everything from clothing to social networking websites, they are now another way to channel individuality or express a particular message to the world.
With the introduction by the DVLA of various suffix and prefix style plates, word (Or W0RD) quickly got around that the certain arrangements of numbers could be used to signify letters. The marketplace for private number plates grew rapidly, but in 1975 the licence was revoked, spelling (In neither letters nor numbers) the end of the cherished number plate business. Number plate dealers during that time were being spearheaded by entrepreneurs, and effectively, the DVLA had obliterated the market.
Since the 1970s however, there has been a revival of people wanting to use personalised number plates, and whether you think they are a great way to make a statement or simply harkening back to the days of yuppie show-offs, this article celebrates private number plates in all their kitschy glory.

Early release number plates, such as the famous A1 plate used by Queen Elizabeth II, were much sought after items and were only offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and after queuing outside the London City Council offices throughout the night, Earl Russell just managed to bag Her Majesty the legendary number plate.
Boxer Amir Khan is also a fan of private number plates, saying "It just finishes it off. Having a nice plate on your car …makes a big difference." As well as the more obvious B0X IIING, His collection of plates, V60 XER, 1180 XER and R6 KKO are all references to the sport.
Silky-voiced sixties ballad crooner Englebert Humperdinckwas keen to put an early release plate, EH 1, onto his Rolls Royce Corniche. His wife later decided he should also have another for his other car, 25 AGD, displaying his birthday (The 2nd of the 5th) and the original initials of his name, Arnold George Dorsey. Other fans of private number plates include Paul Daniels, with his pretty self-explanatory plate MAG IC, andNicky Clarke, whose car bears the wordH41 RDO.
As for famous private number plates from the movies go, there are a few fine examples. Alright, so BMT 216A from the Bond films Thunderball and Goldfinger doesn't ring a bell all too easily, but what about David "Don't hassle the Hoff" Hasselhoff's KNIGHT number plate from the cult TV series Knightrider? Or the famous OUTATIME "Sunrise" license plate on the DeLorean driven by Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future? It seems that personalised number plates really can have a big impact after all.
