How to Efficiently Packing Glassware and Breakables For A Move
No one looks forward to packing for a move but probably the most troublesome aspect of moving is figuring out how to pack things that break easily, including expensive china, glassware, and delicate items. Without proper instruction this can cause stress, anxiety, or even worse, the breaking of your precious, fragile items. Below from the experience of the Gentle Giant Moving Company, are moving tips that if followed, promise to keep your delicate valuables safe during the move.
Before beginning the packing process it is important to start out with the proper resources. For glassware and china, only a few are needed, but they are extremely important to the success of your move. The most important things when wrapping glassware and china are having excessive amounts of paper and the box you will use to pack in. The best box to use is a double re-enforced 5.2 box (called a china barrel) which is especially made to protect glassware. These boxes cannot be found by recycling old boxes from the garage, and should be purchased from a reputable moving company, such as the Gentle Giant Moving Company.
Tips for packing china:
- Firstly, each piece of china needs to be wrapped in three pieces of newsprint before being placed in the box, starting with the heaviest items first
- If there is a lid, wrap the lid in the second layer of paper with the pot, taping the layers together. This ensures the lids will be protected from bumping around, and also because it is not wrapped directly with the pot it is not in danger of falling if an unsuspecting family members tries to help with the unpacking.
- Plates can be packed 3-4 in the same package with newsprint wrap between each. This creates an elevated look, and gives more stability to the plates as a collective mass than as a single, fragile item.
- When placing items in the box, keep each layer of packaging level by using bumpers and extra newsprint to fill in gaps. Remember to always place the heaviest items on the bottom, working your way up to with medium items in the middle and lastly the lightest on top.
- Lay dishes in box vertically, not horizontally to minimize surface area, making them less likely to break. This still applies when wrapping multiple dishes together as mentioned earlier.
- Mugs, teacups, and drinking glasses should go on top, as they are the lightest objects. When packing something of an odd shape, rip the paper as needed and surround object in a way to make it symmetrical.
- Once it is symmetrical, continue to wrap as you would any other object.
- Stemware should be packed in a separate box, in a single layer atop bumpers. These too should be packed vertically and surrounded by bumpers where needed. Keep only one or two layers of stemware per box as they are extremely fragile. It is most desirable to have only one layer of stemware per box with adequate bumpers on all sides.
If you follow these tips for packing your breakables, they should remain intact during the move to your new house.
