Car Shipping – The Nuts And Bolts
More and more people are finding that shipping their car to a new destination is much easier and more time efficient than actually driving it there. If you are considering shipping yours, understanding the nuts and bolts of how the process works is vital.
As you might expect, there isn’ t a lot that goes into the vehicle shipping process. That doesn’t mean that you just drop it off and pick it up. No, you will first need to do some preparation and then follow a specific procedure that will protect you if damage occurs. Let’s take a closer look.
The first step is to get your vehicle ready to go. It needs to be clean. It also needs to have everything taken out of the trunk, glove compartment and so on. Any extraneous items such as car racks, radar detectors, cell phone racks and so on must be removed.
The next step is to get the fluids prepared. You can follow basic maintenance on most of the fluids like oil and such. The gas tank, however, is a different matter. Your car should have no more than a quarter tank of fuel when you drop it off for shipment. In fact, the shipping company will probably mandate it in the contract.
Once you deliver the car to the shipping company, an inspection will take place. Pay attention! This is critical. Go over the inside and outside of the car in detail with the shipping company representative. Make sure they note any issues. Why? This is the document that will be used at the arrival destination to determine if any damage occurred on route. If so, the shipping company should pay for it through their insurance company. It is standard procedure for the insurance company to compare the alleged damage to the original inspection report, so make sure it is accurate and that you have a copy. Make sure to pay attention to the bumpers.
What about cost? It is entirely dependent upon what you are shipping and how far the transport will be. The fees are a subject that vary greatly from one company to another. Some will want partial payment up front. Some will let you pay at the end. Some will invoice you for the fee. Some will demand full payment before the release the car at the end. The key, obviously, is to ask so you know what is expected and don’t get caught flat footed.
